The most authentic town in the region. Roman bridges, white churches, and a slow pace. Take the ferry to the island beach.

Silves

The ancient Moorish capital. The red sandstone castle dominates the skyline. Great place to wander and eat oranges.

Ferragudo

A traditional fishing village that hasn’t been ruined yet. Narrow cobbled streets and fishermen mending nets by the river.

Cacela Velha

A tiny whitewashed village on a cliff overlooking the Ria Formosa. The view at low tide is one of the best in Portugal.

Praia do Carvalho

Accessible only through a tunnel carved in the rock. It feels like a secret smuggler’s cove.

Algar Seco

Skip Benagil. Walk the boardwalk here to see the cliffs and explore the Boneca cave—a natural window to the sea.

Olhão Market

Two red brick buildings on the waterfront. One for fish, one for produce. The seafood is as fresh as it gets.

Marisqueira Rui

In Silves. No-nonsense seafood place. Order the Sapateira (crab) and a glass of salted choco shake.

Estoi Palace

A pink Rococo palace with beautiful azulejo gardens. It’s a Pousada now, but you can visit the grounds for free.

Monchique

Up in the mountains, away from the beach crowds. Cool air, lush forests, and thermal springs.
