the internet cost trillions to build. it cannot tell you a single new thing about the physical world.
it won’t detect an asteroid. it won’t find a new species in the ocean. it won’t discover a material that doesn’t exist yet.
the internet is a mirror. it only shows us what we already put in.
i spent years designing artifacts for digital web. web & mobile screens, rendered and polished. then i started designing furniture from mycelium. actual fungi, weaving itself into forms over weeks in a dark room.
the difference hit hard.digital design was recombination. taking existing requirements, existing aesthetics, making them feel new. the mycelium didn’t care what i’d seen before. it grew according to laws i had to discover by watching it fail, adapt, strengthen.
one was introspection. the other was a window.
the james webb telescope cost $10 billion. meta spends that on the metaverse every year. we have more engineers perfecting our digital reflections than operating all our scientific instruments combined.
the ocean floor. 26% mapped with high resolution sonar. 5% actually explored. maybe a million species down there. 60% undiscovered.
we know more about optimizing ad delivery than about the thing covering 70% of our planet.
mycelium taught me something the internet never could. how fungal networks communicate. how they adapt to stress. how they can digest plastic, bind carbon, grow structures stronger than concrete gram for gram.
i learned this by failing. by watching cultures die. by adjusting humidity and substrate and waiting.
you can’t google your way to that knowledge. someone has to grow it first.
extrospective technologies operate on different timescales. a deep ocean sensor needs years to reveal patterns. a space telescope needs decades. mycelium furniture takes weeks minimum.
our internet-shaped attention spans hate this.
we’ve become incredibly efficient at examining what we already know. we’ve forgotten how to look outward.
the unknown doesn’t live in better algorithms. it lives in the physical world, waiting for technologies that can actually see it.
the internet will document what we discover. it won’t discover anything itself.
